What Is Plan it Green?

Our group holds up the Plan It Green banner

Humboldt Plan It Green is a 501(c)(3), nonprofit, educational organization. It was started by a group of friends, in 2006 as a way to make some noise about green building and sustainable development. It has evolved into an organization that provides valuable programs and services for the emerging green economy.

Board of Directors

Steve Salzman
Executive Director

Steve is one of the founders of Plan It Green. Steve is a licensed civil engineer and a LEED accredited professional. Steve moved to Humboldt County in 1973 to attend HSU and never left. Steve holds a B.A. in Industrial Arts and Technology

After graduation, in 1976, he worked as a solar installer, general contractor, and homesteader. In, 1982, Steve went back to HSU and earned a B.S. in Environmental Resources Engineering. Steve’s professional career includes working with the State of California, the City of Eureka and two private engineering consulting firms. In 2009, Steve and two friends launched GreenWay Partners, in Arcata. GreenWay provides consulting services for a wide variety of clients with project conceptualization, organizational development, and project management.

Board Members

David Narum

David Narum is a principal at Greenway Partners, a consultancy located in Arcata, California. At Greenway his work focuses on business sustainability, sustainable economic development, education (learning spaces) and regenerative design. Since 1989, David has worked with a wide range of clients to create, implement and evaluate innovative strategies for a range of applications, focusing on sustainability.

From 1990-1995 he was a Senior Analyst with the Wisconsin Energy Conservation Corporation (Madison, Wisconsin) where he helped federal, state and municipal governments develop and evaluate energy efficiency programs and regulatory policies, focusing on low-income households, and from 1998-2009 he was the Assistant Director of the University National Park Energy Partnership Program (UNPEPP), working with universities and national parks across the nation to facilitate better energy practices in national park facilities.

David has been a professor at Emory, James Madison and Humboldt State universities, teaching a wide range of courses (economics, energy policy, geography, public policy, and regenerative design). He is currently an adjunct professor in Humboldt State University’s Environmental Resources Engineering department. He received his Ph.D. in 1994 from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in Environmental Policy.

Nate McKeever

Nate McKeever, owner of Arcata-based McKeever Energy & Electric, is a State of California licensed electrical contractor, a licensed Home Energy Efficiency Rater (HERS Rater), a licensed Certified Energy Plans Examiner (CEPE) as well as a Building Performance Institute (BPI) accredited professional.

Nate McKeever is a veteran of the United States Navy, and has earned a Professional Green Builders Certificate from Sonoma State University, and holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Industrial Technology with an emphasis in Construction Management from Humboldt State University. Nate has been involved in the installation of many grid-tied and off-grid photovoltaic solar arrays. He lives in Arcata with his partner Erin Fernandez and their cat Brownie, he enjoys his career as well as surfing, writing, travel, food, learning and music.

Kevin Collier

Micheal Kraft

Micheal Kraft is the Chairman of the Board of Humboldt Plan It Green. He has been involved with the organization since 2007. In his day job as Executive Director of the North Coast Small Business Development Center, Michael leads a team that helps small business owners start their businesses, grow, navigate tough times and thrive over the long haul.

Among Michael’s interests are green business development and finding economically productive and environmentally defensible uses for vacant industrial land around Humboldt Bay. He has bachelor’s degree in history and business from the University of California at Riverside and a master’s degree in business administration from the Drucker School at the Claremont Graduate University. Prior to his career in economic development, he worked for fifteen years in higher education administration, owned his own company and grew up in a small family business.

Our mission is to build a green community through sustainable economic development. We seek to increase the demand for green buildings, renewable energy systems, and local, organic food by providing inspiration, education and technical assistance.
