Outdoor Decking

In Humboldt County there is no shortage of decks. For the better half of a century the “of course” choices were redwood or cedar decking boards. In current times both of those tree species are very limited in board feet capacities of usable and harvestable decking boards. Today the options for more sustainable decking choices are abundant.

With great successes in developing decking from recycled wood, concrete and plastic mixes, the modern consumer has better alternative choices.

Note: While one might be designing or building a more sustainable deck, the individual should note that the actual decking boards are only part of the whole project. Make sure to try and minimize your resource use of concrete, and have the frame constructed from FSC timbers or better yet reclaimed or recycled steel joists. You might fret at first at some of the higher costs of recycled decking but please remember these products have much longer life times, sometimes double, and don’t require much upkeep.

Either way, a little bit of green implementations into your dream deck for Humboldt relaxing will put you more at peace of mind. Please check out a couple of the resources listed to give more options and hints to how to better green your decking project.

Note: Many of the companies who manufacture recycled decking also manufacture the railings, posts, post caps, and pickets for the deck.

Note: Already have a deck? There are many great products for refinishing and retreating your deck; many of these products have zero or low VOC counts and some are plant-based. Please do some internet researching before you go to any of our fine local building centers to request a type.
